Booking choice: The glowworm caves tour, from $73 per person. Check dates Tour details
There is one way into the Te Anau Glowworm Caves: a RealNZ catamaran from the lakefront, about 30 minutes across to the western shore. The tour is the same in January as in July. What changes in summer is the number of boats, the light on the lake and how quickly the good slots go.
This post covers the 2026-27 summer as it looks in late October 2026: the departure pattern, which crossings run in daylight, the school holiday weeks to plan around, and what to book first.
The quick answer
RealNZ does not publish a summer timetable; departures live in its booking calendar. In late October 2026 the calendar shows nine boats a day, from 9:00 am to 8:15 pm, and summer has historically run up to nine departures. In December and January the 7:00 pm trip crosses both ways in daylight. Book one to two weeks ahead in the school holidays (from about 19 December 2026 into early February 2027) and the Christmas to New Year week earlier than that.
What are the Te Anau Glowworm Caves departure times in summer 2026-27?
RealNZ shows times only in its booking calendar. For late October and early November 2026, resellers list nine departures a day from 9:00 am to 8:15 pm.
The RealNZ tour page has no printed timetable. Click Book now and a calendar opens with that day's boats. The Bookme listing for the same tour shows the pattern below for 25 October to 7 November 2026, which is the best guide to the shape of a summer day we can find.
Older RealNZ brochures described summer (October to April) as up to nine departures between 7:45 am and 9:30 pm, against three a day in winter. Expect the 2026-27 calendar to look similar, and expect the exact times to shift. Check your date before you build the rest of the day around a slot. The tour runs about 2 hours 15 minutes door to door (RealNZ's hub page now says 2.5 hours), and you check in 30 minutes before departure.
| Departs lakefront | Back about | Light in late December |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00 am | 11:15 am | Full daylight |
| 10:15 am | 12:30 pm | Full daylight |
| 11:30 am | 1:45 pm | Full daylight |
| 2:00 pm | 4:15 pm | Full daylight |
| 3:15 pm | 5:30 pm | Full daylight |
| 4:30 pm | 6:45 pm | Full daylight |
| 5:45 pm | 8:00 pm | Full daylight |
| 7:00 pm | 9:15 pm | Daylight both ways |
| 8:15 pm | 10:30 pm | Out in daylight, back at dusk |
Is an evening glowworm tour better in summer?
The glow is the same at any hour, because the cave is always dark. What a summer evening gives you is a lake crossing in soft light and a free day before it.
RealNZ says it plainly in its FAQ: you can see the glowworms on any departure, and on evening trips the crossing out or back may be in the dark. In midsummer that hardly applies. Sunset in Te Anau is around 9:35 pm in late December, with usable light until after 10 pm (timeanddate.com has the daily table). The 7:00 pm boat goes and comes back in daylight. The last boat crosses home at dusk, which is lovely if it is calm and chilly if it is not.
Our pick: take an evening departure on the day you do something big. After a Milford Sound day coaches are back in Te Anau in the late afternoon or early evening, and the drive from Queenstown is about 170 km, so an afternoon arrival still leaves time for the 5:45 pm or 7:00 pm boat. Keep the mornings for the long trips. By mid February sunset slips to about 9:00 pm, and by mid March to about 8:10 pm, so the late boat comes home in the dark again.

One cave, one operator, one boat: pick the departure that fits your day. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the glowworm caves tourHow far ahead should I book the glowworm caves for summer?
One to two weeks ahead for school holiday dates, three weeks or more for Christmas to New Year, and a few days ahead outside the holidays.
Each guide takes a maximum of 12 guests, according to RealNZ, so popular evening boats fill fast when the town is full. And Te Anau is full in summer. DOC says Milford Track huts ran at about 95% occupancy last summer and the Kepler Track at 91% (DOC, May 2026), and most of those walkers stay in town before or after.
Book your bed first, then the caves. New Zealand state schools finish term 4 by Friday 18 December 2026 and start term 1 between late January and early February 2027, per the Ministry of Education term dates. Easter 2027 falls on 26 to 29 March, with the autumn school holidays from 10 to 26 April.
| Travel dates | Book the caves | Why |
|---|---|---|
| November to mid December 2026 | A few days ahead | Busy, but before the school holidays |
| 19 to 24 December 2026 | 1 to 2 weeks ahead | Holidays start, Kiwi families on the road |
| 25 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 | 3 weeks or more | The peak week in Te Anau |
| 4 January to early February 2027 | 1 to 2 weeks ahead | School holidays, peak tramping season |
| February to mid March 2027 | Several days ahead | Schools back, overseas visitors still busy |
| Easter, 26 to 29 March 2027 | 1 to 2 weeks ahead | Long weekend |

Cross Lake Te Anau, walk past the underground waterfall and float into the grotto by small boat. About 2 h 15 min in total.
Explore the glowworm caves tour Tour detailsWhat should I book first on a summer trip to Te Anau?
Accommodation, then the long fiord day, then the caves. The fiord trips set your timetable; the caves fit around them.
A Milford Sound day from Te Anau runs most of the daylight hours. The small-group Milford day with walks takes a full day, and the Doubtful Sound coach and cruise runs about 8.5 hours. Book those first, ideally early in your stay so a weather cancellation leaves you a spare day. Then put the caves on an evening, either the same day or your arrival day.
A two-night plan that works: arrive from Queenstown, take an evening boat to the caves, do Milford the next day, then the Lake Te Anau cruise or the bird sanctuary before you leave. More ideas are in our Te Anau guide, and the current fares are in the prices and times guide.

A full Milford Sound day from Te Anau with a nature guide, short walks and a picnic lunch.

Bring a warm layer even on a hot day, cover up against sandflies, and arrive 30 minutes early. Photos are banned inside the cave.
The cave sits at a steady 8 to 12°C year-round, says RealNZ, so a summer evening in shorts turns cold underground. RealNZ's own packing list includes a fleece, a waterproof jacket, non-slip shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent. The sandflies at the jetty mean it.
- Check-in: 30 minutes before departure at 85 Lakefront Drive; it closes 5 minutes before.
- Children: the tour has a section in complete silence, and RealNZ says it may not suit younger guests. Five and up is the usual guide.
- Mobility: you bend low at the entrance and climb steps on wet walkways.
- Booking: RealNZ's booking calendar does not work in private or incognito browser windows.
- Cancellation: 24 hours' notice for a refund, both direct (RealNZ terms) and on GetYourGuide.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Te Anau Glowworm Caves tour run on Christmas Day?
RealNZ describes the tour as running daily year-round, but holiday schedules can differ. Check 25 December in the RealNZ booking calendar before you plan around it.
Are the glowworms brighter in summer?
The glowworms glow all year in the cave, and RealNZ's own seasonal claims contradict each other. Pick your date for the weather and the light on the lake, not for the glow.
Can I book the glowworm caves on the day in summer?
Sometimes, for midday boats outside the holidays. For evening departures in late December and January, book at least a week ahead.
What time is the last glowworm boat in summer?
In late October 2026 the last listed departure is 8:15 pm. Summer timetables have run later in past years, so check the booking calendar for your date.
