Booking choice: The glowworm caves tour, from $73 per person. Check dates Tour details
There is one Te Anau Glowworm Cave, one operator and one boat. RealNZ holds the only concession, so every ticket, wherever you buy it, gets you the same 2 h 15 min trip from the lakefront. The question isn't which tour. It is whether this tour suits you, and when to go.
Below: what you actually see, who comes back delighted and who comes back with a sore back, how it stacks up against Waitomo, and the departure we would book. Facts are from RealNZ's product page unless a link says otherwise.
The quick answer
Yes, for most people. The underground waterfall and the silent grotto are the best short trip in Te Anau, and it runs in any weather. Skip it if you can't crouch, if you've just done Waitomo and want something bigger, or if you have under-fives. Book an evening departure on the day you arrive, and save the next day for Milford Sound.

Is Te Anau Glowworm Caves worth it?
For most visitors to Fiordland, yes. It is short, it runs in rain, and the cave itself is unlike Waitomo: loud, wet and alive with moving water before the glowworm grotto goes silent.
The tour earns its place for three reasons. The crossing of Lake Te Anau gives you the Murchison Mountains from the water. The cave is young, about 12,000 years old, and the Tunnel Burn is still cutting it, so you walk above whirlpools and past a thundering waterfall instead of past dry formations. And the last part, a small boat drifting through total darkness under a ceiling of glowworms, is the bit people talk about at dinner.
It is not perfect. You see a few hundred metres of a 6.7 km system, the boat ride in the grotto is brief, and the adult fare is NZ$154. The usual gripes are price and length, not the glowworms. Go in knowing it is a two-hour outing, not a half-day adventure, and it rarely disappoints.
One cave, one operator, one boat: the 2 h 15 min tour from the Te Anau lakefront.

A 30-minute catamaran crossing, displays at Cavern House, a guided walk past whirlpools and an underground waterfall, then a small-boat ride into the glowworm grotto.
- The crossing: about half an hour each way on a purpose-built catamaran from the RealNZ Visitor Centre at 85 Lakefront Drive to the western shore.
- Cavern House: the base at the cave mouth, with displays on how the cave formed and was found, and free tea and coffee.
- The walk: groups of up to 12 per guide follow lit walkways and steps over rushing water. The roar of the waterfall is the loudest thing on the trip.
- The grotto: you step into a small boat, the lamps go off and the guide moves you through the dark. Thousands of points of blue-green light hang overhead, reflected in the water. Talking stops here, and so do phones.
Bookme's listing also mentions an optional short nature walk by the lake. Everything inside the cave happens on foot or in the boat; there is no crawling.

How long is the Te Anau Glowworm Cave tour?
About 2 hours 15 minutes from the lakefront and back. Add 30 minutes for check-in and plan on roughly three hours.
RealNZ's own pages give anything from "2.5 hours" to "allow two to three hours", and resellers list 2 h 15 min. The split looks like this:
| Part | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Check-in at the visitor centre | 30 min before | Check-in closes 5 minutes before departure |
| Catamaran to the western shore | About 30 min | Outdoor deck and indoor seating |
| Cavern House, cave walk and grotto | About 1 h 15 min | RealNZ puts the cave section at about 45 minutes |
| Catamaran back to Te Anau | About 30 min | In the dark on late evening departures |

Who will not enjoy the Te Anau glowworm tour?
Anyone who can't bend low or manage wet steps, families with under-fives, and anyone who needs photos of everything.
- Crouching: RealNZ warns of significant bending at the cave entrance. The entrance was blasted and raised about 60 cm decades ago (Otago Daily Times), and you still stoop. Tall people, bad backs and stiff knees: take it slowly at the start.
- Mobility: steps throughout, walkways often wet, low light. It is not a wheelchair trip.
- Small children: the operator suggests ages five and up, because the grotto needs complete silence. A crying toddler in the boat spoils it for everyone.
- Photographers: no photos or video anywhere inside the cave, flash or not.
- The cold: the cave sits at 8 to 12°C all year. Bring a fleece even in January.
Claustrophobia is less of an issue than people expect: the cramped part is the entrance, and the passages open up after it. The grotto is pitch dark, though, and you are in a boat. If total darkness bothers you, tell the guide before you set off.

Is it worth it if you have already seen Waitomo?
Yes, if you want a different cave rather than a bigger one. Te Anau has the river, the waterfall and the lake crossing; Waitomo has the scale and the crowds.
Waitomo's Glowworm Cave has about 1.3 km of passages, a 13 m high Cathedral chamber and hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Te Anau's is smaller and quieter, with a dozen people per guide. The glowworm ceilings are similar. What differs is everything around them: Te Anau's cave is wet, noisy and moving, and you reach it by boat across a national park.
If you loved Waitomo for the glowworms alone, Te Anau will feel familiar. If you loved it for the cave, Te Anau adds something. The full comparison, with prices, is in Te Anau vs Waitomo.

At NZ$154 for an adult on RealNZ's site it is not cheap for two hours, but it costs far less than a fiord day and you get a lake cruise thrown in.
For scale: RealNZ's Milford Sound day from Te Anau starts at NZ$269 and its Doubtful Sound cruise at NZ$399 (RealNZ). The caves are the cheap part of a Fiordland trip. Children aged 5 to 15 paid NZ$75 on Bookme's listing in October 2026.
On GetYourGuide the tour showed from US$73 when we last checked, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. That from-price is the lowest fare across dates and ticket types, so look at the adult fare for your date at checkout. If you also want Milford Sound with RealNZ, its package price can beat buying the two separately: see Fiordland combo deals.

Is the day or evening tour better?
The glowworms look the same at any hour, because the cave is always dark. Pick on the lake: daytime for views, a summer evening for the sunset crossing.
RealNZ says it plainly: glowworms are visible on every departure. What changes is the boat ride. In summer, Fiordland stays light until about 9:30pm, so a 7pm departure crosses in evening light and comes back at dusk. In winter the sun sets around 4:30pm and the late boats cross in the dark.
Our pick: an evening departure on the day you drive in from Queenstown. There is little else to do in Te Anau after dinner, and it leaves the next morning free for an early start to Milford. Midday departures suit days when the Milford Road is closed or the weather turns.
Arriving from Queenstown? Book a late departure and keep tomorrow for the fiord.
Check dates for the glowworm caves tourWhat should you pair the glowworm caves with?
Milford Sound the next day. Doubtful Sound if you have a third day, and a slow lake cruise or jet boat if you have a spare morning.
Nobody drives to Te Anau just for the caves. The usual plan is caves in the evening, then a full day on the Milford Road. The small-group Milford day with walks leaves from Te Anau accommodation and stops at Lake Gunn and the Hollyford Valley on the way. Doubtful Sound from Te Anau takes 8.5 hours and has no road in at all.
Shorter add-ons: the Waiau River jet boat runs two hours, and the yacht Faith spends three slow hours on the same lake you cross to the cave. Only the cave tour includes glowworms. More ideas in things to do in Te Anau.

The day after the caves: a nature guide drives the Milford Road with short walks, then two hours on the fiord. Pickup in Te Anau.

Is the Te Anau Glowworm Cave scary?
Not really. The entrance is low and the walkways are lit, but the grotto is completely dark and silent. Most children over five love it; nervous ones should sit next to a parent in the boat.
Can you take photos in the Te Anau Glowworm Caves?
No. Photography and video are banned everywhere inside the cave. Take pictures on the lake and at Cavern House.
Does the glowworm tour run in the rain?
Yes. The cave is underground and the boat has indoor seating, which makes it the obvious plan for a wet day in Te Anau.
Do you need to book the glowworm caves in advance?
In December to February, yes, at least a few days ahead. In winter there are fewer departures but last-minute seats are easier to find.
