Most people don't choose between Te Anau and Waitomo. They choose by island. Waitomo is in the King Country on the North Island; Te Anau is in Fiordland at the bottom of the South Island, more than 1,000 km away with Cook Strait in between. If your trip covers only one island, the answer is already made.
If you are seeing both, or wondering whether to add a second cave, here is how they differ on price, time, crowds and feel, plus the other glowworm caves worth knowing in New Zealand.
The quick answer
Neither is better. Waitomo is bigger, cheaper (NZ$85 adult in 2026), shorter at 45 minutes, and easy to reach from Auckland or Rotorua. Te Anau is smaller and quieter, costs NZ$154, takes 2 h 15 min with a lake cruise, and has a roaring underground river. On the South Island, Te Anau is the only show cave with glowworms on most itineraries. On the North Island, Waitomo or one of its smaller neighbours.

Which glowworm caves are better, Waitomo or Te Anau?
Neither is objectively better, and even RealNZ, which runs Te Anau, says so. Waitomo wins on scale and convenience; Te Anau on atmosphere and the lake crossing.
Pick Waitomo if you are on the North Island, short on time or travelling with small children. Pick Te Anau if you are already in Fiordland, want a smaller group, or want a cave that feels wild rather than polished. The glowworm ceilings themselves are comparable. The difference is the cave around them and how you get there.
One blogger who has done both, See the South Island, felt Waitomo had more glowworms but found Te Anau more interesting because of the waterfall. That matches the honest version: Waitomo for the glow, Te Anau for the cave.

Which glow worm cave is best in New Zealand?
For most travellers, the one on your route. Waitomo for the classic, Spellbound near Waitomo for a small group that allows cameras, and Te Anau on the South Island.
- Waitomo Glowworm Cave: the famous one, with daily tours from 9am to 5pm and an easy road in. Busy, but well run.
- Spellbound: a smaller operator about 15 minutes from Waitomo village, with tours from NZ$79 for adults and a camera-friendly policy (Spellbound). Travel writers at Walk My World put it ahead of the 30 or so glowworm spots they had visited.
- Ruakuri Cave: also at Waitomo, and wheelchair friendly, according to Waitomo's own page.
- Te Anau Glowworm Caves: the main glowworm show cave in the south, and the only one you reach by boat across a national park lake.

Where are the biggest glowworm caves in the world?
There is no official ranking by size. Waitomo holds the Guinness record for the most visited glowworm caves, with 450,000 to 500,000 visitors.
Size is hard to pin down because nobody counts glowworms per cave in a comparable way. What can be measured:
- Most visited: Waitomo Glowworm Caves, 450,000 to 500,000 visitors in the Guinness World Records entry, and about half a million a year before the pandemic.
- Longest system on this list: the Aurora system around the Te Anau cave runs 6.7 km over four levels (RealNZ), but visitors see only about 200 m of it.
- Outside New Zealand: Australia has eight other species of the same genus, in places like Springbrook's Natural Bridge in Queensland and the Newnes glow worm tunnel in New South Wales (Arachnocampa).
Anyone selling you "the biggest glowworm cave in the world" is guessing. For a big, famous glowworm display, Waitomo is the safe answer.
Is Te Anau worth it if you have done Waitomo?
Yes, for the lake crossing and the noisy, living cave. No, if you only want more glowworms.
Waitomo's cave is mostly dry chambers with a stream below. Te Anau's is a young river cave: you walk above whirlpools, past a waterfall loud enough to stop conversation, then into a still grotto. The boat across Lake Te Anau adds an hour of mountains. It feels like a separate trip, not a repeat.
What it won't do is out-glow Waitomo. If your memory of Waitomo is the grotto, Te Anau's grotto will feel similar and shorter. Our worth it guide covers who should skip it.

Waitomo, by a distance. It sits on the road between Auckland and Rotorua. Te Anau needs a night in Fiordland, which you want anyway for Milford Sound.
Waitomo is about two hours south of Auckland and two hours west of Rotorua (Wikipedia), so it slots into a day between the two. Te Anau is 170 km from Queenstown, two to 2.5 hours by road (Fiordland RTO), and the cave adds another three hours.
That sounds like a lot, but nobody goes to Te Anau only for the cave. It is the base for Milford and Doubtful Sound, and the cave fills the evening you arrive. See things to do in Te Anau for a two-day plan.

Waitomo for small children: shorter, cheaper, with a family pass. Spellbound for photographers. Te Anau for children five and up who can keep quiet.
Te Anau asks for complete silence in the grotto, and RealNZ suggests ages five and over. Waitomo's 45 minutes and family pass at NZ$217 make it easier with toddlers. Te Anau bans photos and video outright inside the cave. If photos matter, Spellbound advertises its tours as camera friendly.
Can you do both Te Anau and Waitomo on one trip?
Yes, if you are covering both islands. They are different enough that the second one doesn't feel like a repeat.
The usual pairing: Waitomo on the drive from Auckland to Rotorua early in the trip, Te Anau on the night before Milford Sound at the end. Budget around NZ$239 per adult for both at 2026 fares. If you can afford only one, choose by island and save the money for the fiord.

The day after the caves: Milford Sound with a nature guide, short walks on the way and two hours on the fiord.

Are the glowworms the same species in Te Anau and Waitomo?
Yes. Both caves are home to Arachnocampa luminosa, which lives only in New Zealand.
Is Waitomo or Te Anau cheaper?
Waitomo: NZ$85 for an adult in 2026 against NZ$154 at Te Anau. Te Anau's fare includes an hour of lake cruising.
Which is less crowded?
Te Anau. Groups are up to 12 per guide and visitor numbers are capped to protect the cave. Waitomo sees about half a million visitors a year.
Are there glowworm caves on the South Island besides Te Anau?
Yes, though most are wild or adventure trips: DOC's Clifden Caves in Southland and guided caving at Charleston on the West Coast.
