Booking choice: The Milford Sound day with walks, from $155 per person. Check dates Tour details
State Highway 94 is the only road into Milford Sound. It climbs from the Eglinton Valley to the Homer Tunnel at 945 m, then drops steeply to the fiord. It closes for snow, avalanche risk, floods and rockfall, and it reopens fast, because the Milford Road Alliance (NZTA and Downer) watches it daily.
This post covers the road as it stands in late October 2026, at the tail of the avalanche season, plus the changes coming over the 2026-27 summer. Check the official pages on the morning you drive. They beat anything written in advance.
The quick answer
Check NZTA's Milford Road status page or the journey planner (0800 44 44 49) before you leave Te Anau. NZTA treats May to October as the winter season, and chains may need to be carried from June to November, with a NZ$750 fine if you ignore the signs. Fill up in Te Anau. Expect up to 20 minutes at the Homer Tunnel lights in summer peaks. New resilience works funded in Budget 2026 start at Pop's Corner and Marian Hill.
Is the Milford Road open today, and where do I check?
Check NZTA's Milford Road status page or its journey planner on the morning you drive. Signs at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford also show the current state.
The SH94 Milford Road status page gives the avalanche hazard, closures and the next update time. The NZTA journey planner shows the same closures on a map, and 0800 44 44 49 is the 24-hour line. There is also a Gertrude Valley webcam, refreshed every minute, linked from the NZTA pages.
Closures are rarer than the headlines suggest. NZTA's Milford Road FAQ puts it at about eight days a year on average, mostly in winter. When it does close for snow, it follows a pattern. In late August 2026 the section from Lower Hollyford Road to the Donne River shut at 4:30 pm ahead of forecast snow, and reopened by mid-morning once the ploughs had cleared it.
| When | What to expect | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| Late October to November 2026 | Tail of the avalanche season; snow closures still possible | Check the hazard level every morning |
| December 2026 to February 2027 | Open most days; heaviest traffic; tunnel lights at peaks | Leave Te Anau before 8 am |
| March to April 2027 | Quieter roads, shorter days | A good time to self-drive |
| May to October 2027 | Winter season; chains, closures, no-stopping zone | Take a coach unless you know snow driving |
When is avalanche season on the Milford Road?
Roughly winter and spring. NZTA treats May to October as the winter season, and the hazard often peaks in spring as the snowpack warms.
The Milford Road Alliance said on 24 August 2026 that "we move into the avalanche hazard about this time each year", as spring conditions make the snow less stable (NZTA release via Scoop). It rates the hazard in three steps. At low, travel is mostly unrestricted. At moderate, closures become likely. At high, the road is closed to everyone.
In avalanche conditions you cannot stop where you like. DOC says the stretch from the Hollyford Road junction to The Chasm is a restricted no-stopping zone (DOC driver tips), and NZTA's travel tips name The Chasm and Monkey Creek as the two signposted safe stopping areas. When the winter kiosk about 8 km north of Te Anau is open, every driver goes through it for a briefing.

Do I need snow chains for the Milford Road?
Between June and November you may have to carry them. Signs on the road say when chains are required, and NZTA's FAQ lists a NZ$750 fine for ignoring them.
NZTA's FAQ says vehicles may need to carry chains between June and November, and its travel tips recommend that all drivers carry them in winter. Police can fine drivers who pass a chain sign without them. DOC adds that chains can be hired in Te Anau, and asks you to learn to fit them before you set off, not in the dark at the bottom of the tunnel climb.
Check your rental contract too. Many companies limit or ban driving in snow and on chains. If that rules you out, the small-group Milford trip and the Milford day with walks both start in Te Anau, and the driver deals with the road.

Explore the Milford Sound day with walks Tour detailsWhat is the Homer Tunnel like, and how long are the delays?
A 1.2 km tunnel at 945 m, steep and narrow, with traffic lights in summer peak periods that can hold you for up to 20 minutes.
The tunnel opened in 1953 and is about 3.8 m tall, according to DOC. It drops steeply towards Milford, and coaches cannot pass each other inside, which is why lights run the traffic one way at a time in the busy months. Turn your headlights on, keep to the speed limit and stay in gear on the way down.
The eastern entrance looks different from older photos. NZTA's Homer Tunnel safety improvements project, about NZ$29 million, added a new avalanche and rockfall shelter, an extra lane at the eastern portal, radar and incident cameras. Local media reported it finished in 2024. Kea live along the road, and DOC asks drivers not to feed them.
Is there fuel between Te Anau and Milford Sound?
Treat Te Anau as your last reliable fuel. DOC says there are no fuel stations or shops on the road, and the pumps at Milford are limited.
DOC's advice is direct: leave Te Anau with a full tank and bring food and water (DOC). NZTA mentions a fuel stop at Gunns Camp, off the road in the Hollyford Valley, and a few card-only pumps at Milford Sound that take certain cards with a PIN. Do not plan around either. The return trip is 240 km.
Plan the time as well as the tank. Fiordland's tourism office gives about two hours from Te Anau, and its Milford Road fact sheet says at least two and a half without stops. Once at Milford, allow 45 minutes to park and walk to the cruise terminal. There is no mobile coverage on most of the road.
| Item | Detail | Source |

Resilience works funded in Budget 2026 start at Pop's Corner and Marian Hill. A charge for international visitors to Milford Sound is planned but not in force.
On 16 October 2026 the government said there would "soon be spades in the ground" on SH94 (Beehive release). About NZ$40 million from Budget 2026 goes to the road. Work starts at Pop's Corner and the View Lookout, where the road will be widened and the shoulder protected from the Eglinton River, then at Marian Hill, where rock anchors and a concrete slab will shore up a retaining wall. Six more sites follow later. No traffic plan has been published yet, so expect stop-go control at those spots this summer.
The other change is a fee. Milford Sound is one of four sites where DOC is working on access charges for international visitors. The bill had its first reading on 12 May 2026, and DOC gives no amount or start date. The Spinoff reported charges of about NZ$20 to NZ$50 and no earlier than summer 2027. It does not apply this season. The two magnitude 5.5 and 5.6 quakes near Milford on 2 September 2026 caused no reported issues on SH94, according to NZTA via the Otago Daily Times.
| Date | What | Effect on drivers |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Homer Tunnel safety upgrade finished | New shelter and extra lane at the eastern portal |
| 28 May 2026 | Budget 2026: about NZ$40m for SH94 resilience | Funding only |
| 12 May 2026 | Conservation Amendment Bill, first reading | No charge yet |
| 16 October 2026 | Works announced at Pop's Corner and Marian Hill | Expect stop-go at those sites |
| Summer 2027 at the earliest | Possible international visitor charge at Milford | Not in force for 2026-27 |
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound?
About two to two and a half hours for the 120 km without stops. DOC says to allow about eight hours for the return trip with short walks and a cruise.
Is the Milford Road dangerous in summer?
It is narrow, steep near the tunnel and busy with coaches, but it is a sealed state highway that is closely managed. Drive slowly, use the pull-overs and do not stop in no-stopping zones.
Do I need to carry chains on the Milford Road in December?
Normally no. NZTA says chains may need to be carried between June and November. Follow the signs at the start of the road on the day.
Can I do the Milford Road and the glowworm caves on the same day?
Yes. Leave Te Anau early, cruise around midday, and you are back by early evening for a 7:00 pm or later glowworm boat in summer.
